O’s Get Smashed By Division Champs, 16-5

Kris Benson takes the not-so-hard-luck loss. He finishes 11-12 for the year.

Benson could only last 2 and 2/3rd innings before being removed from the game. He gave up 8 hits, 8 runs, a walk, and 3 homeruns in his brief time. Bruce Chen came in and opened up the flood gates even more. Chen allowed 5 hits, 5 runs, a walk, and another homerun before getting out of the inning. Sendy Rleal pitched 2 solid innings of relief before Winston Abreu came in and gave up 3 runs in an inning of work. Abreu started off hot, but now his ERA is at 10.13. Julio Manon finished it up with 2 scoreless innings. It looks like most peoples prediction of Benson before the season held true.

Obviously it didn’t matter what the offense did, it wouldn’t be good enough to win the game. Brian Roberts and Nick Markakis had doubles. So did David Newhan, who also had a single. Melvin Mora had 3 hits. Ramon Hernandez had two. Kevin Millar, Jay Gibbons, and Chris Gomez had the other hits.

Markakis watch: 1-5 (.295)

Daniel Cabrera (8-10, 5.10) and Darrell Rasner (3-0, 3.55) pitch against one another in the next match up. Go O’s.
