The Orioles finalized the opening day roster by placing Jay Payton and Sendy Rleal on the 15-day disabled list and passing Todd Williams through waivers, sending him to AAA Norfolk.
The 25 man roster for opening day looks like this:
Catcher: Ramon Hernandez, Paul Bako
First Base: Aubrey Huff, Kevin Millar
Second Base: Brian Roberts, Freddie Bynum, Chris Gomez
Third Base: Melvin Mora
Shortstop: Miguel Tejada
Outfield: Nick Markakis, Corey Patterson, Jay Gibbons
Starting Pitchers: Erik Bedard, Daniel Cabrera, Adam Loewen, Jaret Wright, Steve Tracshel
Relief Pitchers: Chris Ray, Danys Baez, Jamie Walker, Chad Bradford, Scott Williamson, John Parrish, Jeremy Guthrie, Brian Burres
If you ask me, its pretty stupid to carry 13 pitchers and only 3 bench players. I think 12 pitchers and 4 bench players is stretching it, I didn’t think I’d ever see a team only carry 3 players on the bench. I would have carried Jon Knott or Jason Dubois over Freddie Bynum, and JR House over Brian Burres. At least until Payton came off the DL, then I would release Bako.
Either way, I’m excited about the season starting tomorrow. Erik Bedard (0-0, 0.00) goes up against Johan Santanna (0-0, 0.00). Go O’s.
