Daniel Cabrera receives loss number 2 on the season.
Cabrera didn’t actually pitch too bad. He got through the first 6 innings only giving up one run, on an Alex Cora solo homerun. He seemed tired in the 7th, but Sam Perlozzo left him out there. All of a sudden the bases are loaded with 2 outs and David Ortiz coming up to the plate. Thats where Cabrera’s night ended. His final line was 6 and 2/3rds innings, 5 hits, 3 runs, 5 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Jamie Walker came into the game to get Ortiz, and he had him 0-2. But Big Papi worked the count to 3-2 and kept fouling pitches off until he blooped a single into left field. Next up was Manny Ramirez, who would face Chad Bradford. Bradford got 2 strikes on him before Manny lined a single into center field and plated another run. Bradford would eventually get out of the inning on a strikeout, but not before he walked 2 batters. Jim Johnson pitched the final 2 innings for the birds, his first appearance for the Orioles this season, and let in 2 more runs on 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out a batter.
The offense decided not to show up for the 2nd straight game. With Melvin Mora and Jay Gibbons on the bench, the O’s only managed 5 hits. One of those hits was a Miguel Tejada homerun, his 2nd of the year and first since opening day, to tie the game at 1 a piece in the 6th inning. That would be it for the runs, although Aubrey Huff would hit a double, Chris Gomez would hit a single, and Paul Bako would go 2 for 2 with a couple of singles and a walk. Corey Patterson walked, stole a base, and made a sensational catch to rob Manny Ramirez in the 9th inning, although it was much too late to make a difference.
Player of the game: Miguel Tejada - 1-3, HR, R, RBI
Tonight the O’s face the Red Sox again. This time against Josh Beckett (4-0, 2.55). The Orioles have Adam Loewen (2-0, 3.72) going for them. Go O’s.
