2 Pitchers To DL

May 5, 2007

RHP Jaret Wright returns to the DL after one start and LHP Adam Loewen goes to the DL for the first time with a stress fracture in his pitching elbow. In their places LHP Kurt Birkins and RHP Todd Williams were called up from AAA Norfolk to fill their spots.

Grade: C+

Jaret Wright might not pitch again, his shoulder just won’t stop giving him problems. Adam Leowen is a big injury, he’ll be out at least 8-10 weeks. Kurt Birkins and Todd Williams were probably the right people to call up. Jeremy Guthrie and Brian Burres can slide into the rotation, at least for now. Hayden Penn just got surgery to remove a bone spur thats been in his elbow for 3 years, he’ll be back around August. The Orioles also have RHP Rob Bell and LHP Garrett Olson in AAA Norfolk. I’d like to see Olson get a shot eventually, I think he could be a fixture in our rotation for years to come.

First of all, I would like to apologize for the lack of posts this week. I just moved into my new place and I don’t have the internet there yet. I’m not sure when I’ll be able to get it back, so I won’t be posting as frequently until that happens. I’ll be posting recaps of each series instead of each game, until I get my internet service back up.

The Orioles were swept in Detroit by the Tigers in a 3 game series. The pitching struggled a little, but really it was the offense that couldn’t produce with runners in scoring position. The biggest loss of the series may have been Adam Loewen, the team found a stress fracture on his pitching elbow and he’ll be out for at least 8 weeks. Here are the stats for the series:

Daniel Cabrera (0-1) – 5 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 6 BB, 5K, 1 HR

Chad Bradford – 2 IP, 2 H, K
Jeremy Guthrie – IP
Jamie Walker – IP, H, K
Danys Baez (0-1) – IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, K

Nick Markakis – .272/.385/.455, 2 R, 2 2B
Miguel Tejada – .417/.462/.417, 3 RBI

Corey Patterson – .182/.182/.182, R, RBI
Kevin Millar – .167/.167/.167
Chris Gomez – .333/.333/.333

The Orioles play a weekend series back at home next, against the Cleveland Indians. Projected starters are Erik Bedard (3-2, 6.09 ERA), Daniel Cabrera (1-3, 4.50 ERA), and Brian Burres (0-0, 1.35 ERA). Go O’s.
