Mark Hendrickson got his 3rd victory pitching in relief. George Sherrill earned his 17th save.

Wow. What a game. Lets start with the bad news. Rich Hill struggled mightily once again. He only lasted 3.1 innings, he gave up 9 runs on 9 hits, 3 walks, and 2 homeruns. I don’t know how much longer we can stick with this guy if he keeps pitching like this. Hes got great stuff and has proven that when hes on his game hes close to unhittable, but right now hes getting hammered. He came away from the game without a loss though, thanks to the dramatic comeback the offense mounted. But the bullpen did a good job of holding the Red Sox. Matt Albers pitched 1.2 scoreless innings (although he did let in some of Hill’s baserunners), Hendrickson gave up 1 run in 3 innings, and Sherrill closed it out in the 9th after the O’s had taken the lead for the first time all game. Some other bad news was Adam Jones having to come out of the game after colliding with the wall on a great effort to steal another homerun away.

But that actually set up Felix Pie to make his breakout game with the O’s. We scored our first run in the bottom of the 3rd when Pie tripled to score Robert Andino. That was our only scoring until the 7th, where we broke out for 5 runs. Aubrey Huff and Nolan Riemold hit back to back singles to start the inning. That was followed by an RBI double by Luke Scott. Oscar Salazar pinch hit for Melvin Mora and destroyed a 3 run homer, his first of the year, to cut the lead in half. Matt Wieters was next and he singled into center. A force out left Andino on first and a ground out moved him up to second. Pie followed that up with a single to score Andino again, and it was 10-6. Nick Markakis singled, but Huff lined out to end the inning. Pie also saved a run in the top of the 8th when he threw a perfect strike from center field to home plate to record the final out of the inning. Then in the bottom of the inning Riemold got us started again with another single, Scott hit another double, Salazar hit an infield single, and Wieters singled to score another run. Ty Wiggington hit a sacrifice fly to make it 10-8, then Brian Roberts singled to make it 10-9. Pie struck out, setting the stage for Markakis to double into the gap and give the Orioles the lead. That would be enough to hold on, completing the biggest comeback in Orioles history. What a night, I’m sure alot of people turned the game off at some point and woke up in disbelief when they heard the final score.
Player of the game: Nick Markakis (2-5, 2 RBI, double (23) (.300 AVG))
The O’s are hoping to take advantage of the momentum of last night game this afternoon when Brad Bergesen (5-2, 3.76) takes on Josh Beckett (9-3, 3.48) in what looks to be a pitchers duel.
