O’s Escape Sweep 6-1

July 4, 2010

W – Brian Matusz (3-9)     L – John Lackey (9-4)

Brian Matusz finally broke his streak of games without getting a win. Since April 24th he had went 0-9 with a 5.09 ERA over the span of 13 starts. He was excellent yesterday tossing 7 shutout innings while only allowing 2 hits and 3 walks and striking out 8 batters. He has been pitching better and better lately and this might’ve been his best start of the season. Hopefully he can keep it up. He has been facing some tough lineups in his starts this year. The only downside to the outing was his pitch count. He threw over 100 pitches in those seven innings. In a perfect world you would like to see him go eight or nine innings when hes pitching that good. Jason Berken pitched a perfect 8th inning but gave up a solo homerun to lead off the 9th. He got the next batter out but was removed for Will Ohman with a lefty up. Ohman struck out JD Drew and then Alfredo Simon came in to face a righty. I don’t understand all the pitching changes with a five run lead unless he wanted to get these guys some work in. Simon walked the first batter he faced but struck out Daniel Nava to end the game.

The offense benefited from the sloppy play of the Red Sox defense. It was a nice change of pace since its usually the other way around. In the 4th inning Nick Markakis led off with his league leading 25th double and moved to third on Ty Wiggington’s groundout. John Lackey threw a wild pitch allowing Markakis to score and the O’s had a 1-0 lead. Adam Jones singled and scored on Scott Moore’s single. It was a great read by Gary Allenson, the third base coach, as Jones was running on the pitch and never stopped rounding the bases. All was silent until the top of the 8th when Miguel Tejada led off with a double, moved to third on a Markakis single, and scored when Boston’s shortstop made a throwing error. Jones lifted a sacrifice fly to score Markakis and the lead grew to a comfortable 4-0 cushion. Two more came in during the 9th inning. Cesar Izturis singled and scored on Julio Lugo’s gift triple. It was a fly ball right to the right fielder but he lost the ball in the sun and missed it completely allowing Lugo to reach third base. Markakis singled again to bring in our final run. Josh Bell struck out three times and left the game early with a leg cramp.
