O’s Lose A Wild One 12-9

July 5, 2010

W – Eddie Bonine (4-0)     L – Mark Hendrickson (1-4)

It looks like Kevin Millwood is in spring training mode and its not helping the Orioles on the field or his trade value. He barely made it through the first inning today and didn’t come back out for the 2nd. He gave up 5 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks with a strikeout in the first and I can’t help but think hes quit on this season and is just going through the motions. Hes a professional so maybe thats not the case and hes just struggling very badly right now. You would think he would want to pitch good so he can get traded to a contender and set himself up as a free agent in the offseason. None of the other Oriole pitchers did much better today. Mark Hendrickson gave up 3 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks over 3 innings, Koji Uehara gave up 2 runs on 3 hits and a walk in the 5th, and Matt Albers gave up 2 runs on 3 hits and a walk over 1.1 innings. David Hernandez came in with runners on first and second and walked the first batter he faced before giving up a single to score two runs. He settled down after that pitching the final 1.2 innings without allowing another baserunner and struck out 3 batters.

The Orioles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning but that obviously didn’t last long. Corey Patterson led off by reaching on an error, stealing third base, and scoring on Miguel Tejada’s groundout. After the Tigers scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 1st we answered back with 5 of our own in the top of the 2nd. Jake Fox singled and scored on Julio Lugo’s triple. Cesar Izturis singled in Lugo, moved to second on Patterson’s groundout, and scored on Tejada’s single. Nick Markakis walked, Ty Wiggington doubled in Tejada, and Markakis scored on a wild pitch. A Fox solo homerun gave us another run after Detroit scored three more in the bottom of the 2nd. We tried to make a late rally in the 9th but we came up short. Markakis led off with a walk, Wiggington singled, they both moved up on a ground ball out, and both scored on Matt Wieter’s second single of the game. Fox singled again but Scott Moore grounded out and Izturis popped up to end the threat. It was a long game on a miserably hot day for the players and the way the pitchers were used today could mean that Josh Bell is sent back down to AAA Norfolk to make room for Felix Pie tomorrow.

Player of the game: Jake Fox – 3-5, 2 R, RBI, HR (4) (.226 AVG)

Game two is a night game tomorrow with the Orioles needing innings out of Jake Arrieta (2-2, 5.81) as he goes up against Armando Galarraga (3-2, 4.50).

Ty Wiggington Selected To All-Star Game

July 5, 2010

INF Ty Wiggington was selected as a reserve for the 2010 MLB all-star game in Anaheim. He was the lone Oriole selected.

I don’t think this was the best choice. I understand Joe Girardi needed an extra infielder that could play second base with Dustin Pedroia on the disabled list but Wiggington is arguably the 5th best choice on the Orioles roster. In my opinion Nick Markakis, Adam Jones, Luke Scott, and Jason Berken were each more deserving. I understand Scott is on the DL but Markakis has been the most consistently good bat in the lineup and he leads the league in doubles. Jones has come on really strong since starting off the year very badly. Berken has been our relief ace coming out of the bullpen with a 1.75 ERA. I would’ve went with Markakis myself but congratulations to Wiggington for making his first all-star team regardless. He started off the season on fire after an injury to Brian Roberts and bad play from Garrett Atkins gave him everyday at bats in the lineup. His first two months were all-star worthy, unfortunately hes been in a slump thats lasted more than a month. On the year hes batting .246/.331/.445 with 12 doubles, 14 homeruns, and 43 RBI. The one positive that might come from this for the O’s is that it could increase his trade value as we look to deal our veterans before the July 31st trade deadline. Good luck to Ty and the American League in the game next Tuesday.
